Eri maiden rintaliivikoot: UK ja EU / Bra sizing in different countries: UK and EU

Sitten UK-systeemiin.

Siellä aihetta on käsitelty paljon kattavammin.

Perusajatukseni näiden kokoluokitusten eroista voisi kuitenkin tiivistää seuraavaan: EU-koon H-kuppi vastaa UK-koossa vain F-kuppia. Älä siis pelästy kokoasi, kuppeja riittää kyllä ja pienenkin näköiset rinnat ovat usein D-G-kuppia. Mitatessasi ympärysmittaa pääset kenties helpoimmalla, kun katsot senttien sijaan tuumia. Mikäli päätä kuitenkin katsoa senttejä, tarvitset todennäköisesti 5-10 senttiä pienemmän koon kuin mittasi antavat olettaa.

In English: Oh my, this has been a though post to write. I've been trying to write it for weeks, actually. Maybe I'm just too much of a humanist to write about measurements and calculations. :D

Well, the basiscs is that your underbust measurement equals your band size. This is true when you measure in inches but the EU sizing system is a bit different. It basically uses the old +4 method, but with the adding already done so you yourself wouldn't have to add anything. Like most of us know, it's not good to add anything to your measurement because you need all the support you can get from a bra band.

This is how the size conversion between EU and UK works:

UK         EU
28           60
30           65
32           70
34           75
36           80
38           85
40           90
42           95 etc.

The only problem is, that the 28 inches does not equal 60 centimeters. Actually, 60 centimeters is only 23,6 inches! That's why I advice women to use the inch measurement rather than the centimeter measurement to get the process as easy as possible. If you measure centimeters, you'd have to substract 5-10 centimeters to get the right band measurement. If you measure in inches, your underbust measurement is your band measurement.

Let's take an example. I measure 105 centimeters underbust. The EU-system says that I should use a 105 and, because it's just the old +4 method converted in to centimeters. Instead, I use my inch measurement, which is 41,3 inches. That suggests I should use a 40 or 42 band measurement. I use 40, because I've got fat on my ribcage and it compresses a lot so I'll get the best support by going down in band measurement. If I'd use 105/46 band, I'd have zero support, shoulder straps digging in and band riding up at the back. So, instead of substracting from my cm measurement, I find it easier to just measure in inches to get the right band directly.

Oh, I hope this makes sense to you guys. I suggest you red further on Wikipedia as there's good info about the starting points of different measurement systems.

I also find it very comforting that a EU H cup is only a F cup in UK system. Here in Finland we're somehow suggested that the EU H cup is enormous and definately the last bra alphabet. I'm so glad it isn't so!

  1. The Wikipedia size conversion table should be obligatory reading to every so-called "lingerie-shop" saleswoman here in Finland. I'm putting it in quotes because in my opinion you can't honestly say you own a lingerie shop/work in one if you claim that bras don't come in bigger cups than H. It's like saying that there are no bigger women's shoes than EU37.

However, I'm wondering just how exact any of these conversion tables really are. A personal example: I have to buy 30J in Freya and 32H in Fantasie, but most Primadonna 70H's suit me quite fine. According to the table I should be needing 70L(!). Since they don't make them, it's a moot point, but still...

  2. I know... Love your comment about the shoe size, so accurate! The situation in lingerie shops here is just unbelievable. I don't fit into the Prima Donna H cup and so they just keep fitting me in bigger bands or just sell me the wrong size bra. Oh well, I'm happy I'm not the only one who isn't going to believe their fittings and claims anymore. There are sizes out there, they just don't know or don't care.

I've also noticed that there doesn't seem to be as much difference in the cup sizes as the table suggests. Prima Donna is known to run very large in the cups, so i'm not sure if that's only the situation in Prima Donna and UK sizes.

  3. I don't think the stated difference is there at all ... I'm wearing a german brand at the moment (Ulla) in a 70E, which is pretty much the biggest bra I own (with the exception of a 70G from Simone Perele)and I usually wear a 32F/FF in UK sizing

    1. Brands have of course got some difference in their sizing. I however have way too big boobs for my 95H Prima Donna (EU), which is known for their big sizing. In Curvy Kate I wear 90H which fits pretty well. So I guess this is largely a brand issue as well...

  4. I have to agree with Bravissimo's web page where they say that you shouldn't trust any measuring tape but get fitted. According to the table above, I should be wearing FF cup.
...yeah, I once did. Like, five years ago. I still have some of those 32FF's in my back closet and no way I could stuff my boobs into them without serious masochistic tendencies. Would hurt just too much. And the quadra-boob... oh, horror. It would be more like octo-boob.

    1. Yes, to get WELL fitted would be the best option. However, fitters here in Finland do their job badly often. So, unless you live nearby a Bravissimo or other shop that is known for their good fitting, I suggest doing the job yourself.

A measuring tape is a good starting point, and it should be used as such. After you get an idea of what you should be wearing, you should check how the bra fits. You learn that pretty quickly and I do think that with some reading you are able to do a good fitting yourself. At least a lot better than many of those crappy fitters out there. :-)

    2. That's so true. On the other hand, considering how often you can see really badly fitting under E-cups in our biggest tabloid magazines in the fashion section, how many young girls really stop to consider how a well-fitting bra _feels_ like? They only see those bulging bosoms of the photomodels and think that must be the way a good bra looks. :(

  5. Oh thank you for this post :) The EU system is really the "+4" already built-in, which gave me some trouble to figure out when searching for the correct bra size. I personally am 29"/approx 74cm (measured loosely) underbust.

The puzzling part is this: the same logic that says "band size should (more or less) match your underbust measurement" puts me into 28/30 band in the UK system which is right and fitting, but when applied to the EU system, I end up in a 75 band riding up my back.. :-)

    1. So glad you found it useful! This is why I suggest dumping the centimeters and using inches and UK sizes only. :-)

The sad thing is that no one here even discusses the +4 since it's built in our system. Actually, most fitters here think that it's ok to take an even bigger band than your underbust measurement in centimeters, which is more like +6. :-/
