Rintani rakastavat plunge-rintaliivejä / My breasts love plunge bras

This illustration with my mad Paint skills show you, why high central gores don't work for me. The orange lines show where my breast tissue starts and you can see that there is not a lot of space between them for a higher central gores. Even though this pic is taken with a bra on, this is pretty much how my cleavage is without a bra, as well.
"If you have big breasts, you need to wear full cup bras with high coverage and high central gore". This is the most annoying misconseption I hear about big bras.

For some reason full bust companies tend to think that women with big breasts need or want high central gores. While of course some women do, in general this is not true! Lingerie brands still sell a lot of bras with high central gores, but I have a theory: women often buy too small bras, and therefore they do not even see how high the central gores are designed. And in a too small bra the central gore isn't usually tacking to your sternum anyway, so the higher central gore won't dig in anyway.

Why do low central gores and big breasts go well together, then? Because in a right size, the central gore just anchors the bra in place. In a too small size, the central gore is just "caging" the breast inside the bra and it then seems like the central gore needs to be really high to provide enough support. When in fact the central gore doesn't really support that much, it's there to provide an anchor to the bra and give stability. Most of the support, in fact, comes from the band and the whole wires.

Also, big breasts are often very close set. In those cases you do not have any room for high central gores to tack into place and they are just plain uncomfortable and dig in. This is the reason why I need low central gores to feel comfy. When I put a non-plunge bra on, the wires will always be digging on my breast tissue a bit. There just isn't room for high central gores between my breasts.

I don't think all full bust bras should have low central gores, not at all. It's just that in H+ or 38+ sizes there aren't many options fow lower gores. Many brands have insanely high central gores in the bigger cup sizes even in the models they call balconnettes (yes Panache and Curvy Kate, I'm looking at you...). To me, it doesn't make sense to make the same cut bra over and over again. Most lingerie brands should provide more variety to their customers. I mean, I love Elomi, but there is only two plunges in their collection. I do love them, but what I would love more if they provided something different as well, like a padded plunge. Other brands, like Panache, Freya, Fantasie, and Curvy Kate, do not make plunges above 38 band and most plunges only go up to a G cup. What's up with that?

I just wish brands would realize that there is a demand for low central gores in higher cup sizes and that with the right bra fitting education you can affect the bra styles women choose to have.

And yes, you also have to concider how low is a low central gore. I have actually never even tried a super low central gore, I believe all of my plunges are at least 2 inches tall in the gore. However, I think that as long as the central gore comes lower than the midway of your breasts, it is a low central gore. You could call it a plunge bra, but most often plunges are assosiated with low necklines or evening wear. When I say low central gore, I mean something that supports you enough to wear it everyday! It could be that you find your breasts falling in the middle of your very low plunges, but that only means that you need a central gore a bit higher. Also, there is the matter of coverage. You can have a low central gore and still have tons of coverage! That usually means that the cups for a deep V angle, covering most of the breast. The fabric of the cups help contain the tissue in its place and reduce the jiggle when you walk around.

I'm not saying low central gores work best for everyone. However, I do think they work a lot better than most people think. And there is no reason for companies to offer only high central gores, full cups and high balconnettes for full bust and obese women.

Tarkista, istuvatko rintaliivisi oikein / Just a quick check to see if your bra fits correctly

Mikäli haluat lukea aiheesta enemmän, lue ainakin Boosauruksen, By Babys Rulesin, FullerFigureFullerBustin ja Thin and Curvyn blogipostaukset aiheesta.

1. Onko rintaliiviesi keskiosa kiinni rintakehässä?
Katso kohtaa, jossa kaarituet kohtaavat toisensa rintaliivien välissä.

In English: I know there are loads of posts around on this subject, but I wanted to simplify even further and to have this post in Finnish as well. Read more on the subject from Boosaurus, By Babys Rules, FullerFigureFullerBust ja Thin and Curvy just to name a few great articles on the same subject.

My point of view is a bit different, though. I often get concerned messages from readers who have all sorts of bra problems, like uncomfortable bras, sore spots, looseness in the cups etc. Very often those things can be cured by checking the basic fit with my three simple steps and by putting your bra on properly. If the fitting tips and putting your bra on correctly don't help, it could be that the bra just isn't right for you and you should look for different styles. Now, on to the three questions, that should tell whether you are wearing the right size.

1. Is your central gore flat against your sternum?
I find that this is propably the most important thing in wired bras. The central gore should be anchored to your sternum and you should not be able to fit your fingers inside the bra at the central gore. If the central gore isn't anchored well, you're not getting the support you need. It means you're wearing a too small cup and possibly a too big band as well. If you can put just one finger between your central gore and sternum, the chances are 1-2 cups bigger might be enough. If there's a bigger gap, you propably need a lot bigger cups than the ones you are wearing.

2. Is the band level with the floor?
Check the side and back view from a mirror. Is it in level with the floor and doesn't ride up at any point? If it rides up, you need a smaller band. Measure your underbust tightly in inches. That should be the band you are wearing or very close to it! If you measure, say, 31 inches, you could wear 30 or 32 bands depending on your breast weight and the desired support level. We are all individual, and some women find they need a bigger or smaller band than their measures suggest. That's ok as long as you've had your measurements as a starting point!
This problem is often combined with straps digging in, which basically also means you need a smaller band (and often a bigger cup). You don't need very wide straps even if you have big boobs, because the band and the wires are the ones that should carry the weight, not you're straps.

3. Are your breasts bulging out of the cups or are you afraid they'll pop ot if you bend over?
Even in half cups and other low cut bras you should feel well supported and stay inside the cups! If you have this problem, you need a bigger cup. It's also very common for women to wear full cups and still get cleavage in them. Full cup should be a bra that cover your breast tissue completely or almost completely, so chances are you're wearing a too small cup! If you want clevage, opt for half cups and plunges that have a cut meant to create cleavage.
Also, you could be bulging from the sides instead of getting a quadraboob. You should first get a bigger cup, and if that doesn't help, try bras with more side coverage.

Now that you have checked your bra fit, comment below, did your bra pass this test? :-)

Rintaliivit pienille rinnoille / Bra fitting for small breasts: guest post by Eternal*Voyageur

Miksi pienirintaisenkin kannattaa hankkia hyvin istuvat rintaliivit

Vastaus on ehdoton kyllä. Syyt ovat seuraavat.

Hyvin istuvat rintsikat saavat pienienkin rintojen parhaat puolet esiin.

Oikean kokoiset liivit tuntuvat mukavilta.

Samalla tavalla sinun kannattaa suhtautua rintoihisi: kaikki rinnat ansaitsevat täydellisesti istuvat rintaliivit!

Usein pienirintaisten naisten on vaikea löytää sopivan kokoisia liivejä. Onneksi on kuitenkin useita merkkejä, jotka tarjoavat pieniä kokoja! Ewa Michalak, Parfait Affinitas, La Senza, Damaris, Mimi Holliday, Marks & Spencer, Claudette, The Little Bra Company ja Gossard ovat merkkejä, joita suosittelen.

In English:  I'll be publishing my first guest post by the lovely Eternal*Voyageur. She has amazing posts on bra fitting on her blog and she's an expert on smaller breasts, being a 28DD herself. This is the first part of my small breasts -series, which I will be posting under the tag "small breasts".

Fitting small breasts -- why you should bother finding the perfectly-fitting bra

One of my life missions is that all of my friends have perfectly fitting bras, and as you imagine this is not always easy. Not every woman is thrilled with my awkward "now, lets talk about your boobs" conversations. And guess who are the ones that refuse to hear anything about better-fitting bras? It's almost always the small-chested women. I remember one of them protectively hiding her boobs behind crossed arms and saying "There is almost nothing in here, it's not worth it. I always get some crappy little bras from a bazaar, no bra can improve the situation, believe me." Many small-chested women have a lot of insecurities about their boob size, which I attribute (like most body image issues) to the media, which tells us we have to have the figure of Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian at the same time. Or rather, the boobs of the latter stuck to the body of the former -- as if women were made of lego-pieces.
But I'll lay off with the body-image talk for a moment and get to the core of my mission. If your bras are small enough to need a bra only for modesty and not for support; why not just wear a cute, cheap bra from the high-street that more or less fits? If you have very small boobs, does it make sense for you to shell out money for correctly-fitting bras, and spend your time on trying to find the perfect bra?
The answer is a vehement yes. Here are the reasons:

A well-fitting bra will make even very small breasts look their best. You will notice a difference! -- a better shape, more lift and often optically bigger boobs. In badly fitting bras a part of the breast often ends up outside of the cup, whereas a correctly-sized bra encircles the entire breast. My boobs look way better in well-fitting unpadded bras than in badly fitting push-ups.

You will be more comfortable. No poking, pinching, rubbing and pressing, no more straps that slip off or cut in. Also, no more boob bounce when running (yes, many small busted women have this problem too!)

The breast tissue which has migrated to your armpits and back will return, making your breasts fuller / bigger. Also, you will have much less armpit rolls, which everybody will agree is a great thing.

Breasts in perfect bras age better. They not only get better support, but also the breast tissue is not kneaded or pushed out as happens in badly fitting cups. So even if you seriously believe that things can't get better in your chest area, they will get worse if you keep on wearing badly-fitting bras.

All body parts deserve pretty and comfortable clothing. You need to wear comfortable shoes even if you don't "like" your feet. You choose the most flattering jeans regardless which size your hips are. In the same way, all breasts, big and small, deserve perfectly-fitting bras!

Here is a refresher course in finding your bra size: your underbust measurement (measured snug) is your band size. Round up in necessary. Measure yourself loosely in the bust; every inch of difference between the underbust and bust measurement is one cup size. I measure 27/32 and wear a 28DD. Outdated fitting methods would put me into 32B -- which offer me neither support or lift, only discomfort.

Which brands cater to the small busted? Often women who measure themselves as, say, 28B, are at loss as to where to find such bras. Luckily there are several brands out there who do make such sizes! Ewa Michalak, Parfait Affinitas, La Senza, (all three have very snug bands), Damaris and Mimi Holliday, Marks & Spencers, Claudette (28 bands coming in 2013), The Little Bra Company and Gossard are some brands that I recommend. O course, you can always write to your favourite brand asking then to produce their size -- many brands have increased their size range due to requests from customers. And don't forget to participate in the Bra Band Project, which wants to make small-busted women that need small bands visible to bra manufacturers!

Miksi sinun EI kannata mennä rintaliiviliikkeeseen? / Why you should NOT get fitted by a professional?

Rintaliivimyyjien tarkoitus on myydä

In English: There's a lot of reasons why you SHOULD trust an expert when it comes to bra fittings. They have seen a lot of women and different breast shapes and sizes, they know the bras they're selling and if you're lucky, they really know what they're doing. Unfortunately, there's more reasons why I recommend studying bra fitting yourself instead.

There's no way to know if you're going to a good fitter or a bad fitter unless you know things about bra fitting yourself
There are signs that can tell you that a fitter knows something about bras.
  • She should not add inches to your underbust
  • She should not trust solely on measuring tape but also check how the bra fits
  • She should NEVER try to sell you a bra that has a central gore not lying your ribcage
  • She should NEVER try to sell you a bra that has the band riding up
  • She should NEVER try to sell you a bra that gives you the quadraboob
  • She should always check that all the breast tissue is inside the cup by asking you to pull your tissue in the cup from the armpits
However, unless you know these are a few things to look in a good fitter, you don't know if your fitter is any good. That's the basic problem. I suggest you always check for these signs IF you decide to get fitted.

There's no certificate to prove that your fitter is educated and aware of how a bra should fit
You wouldn't go to a doctor without a certificate to prove his/hers education, would you? Then, why should you trust your precious breasts with someone who has nothing to prove theirs. The fact that someone works in a bra boutique does not make them experts. Knowledge, education and interest make experts.

Bra fitting is not rocket science
Even though the world of bras and fitting might seem a bit overwhelming, you can easily study the basics yourself. I suggest you read some bra blogs (check my blogroll). Most of them have posts on the basics of bra fitting. Believe me, you'll learn quickly!

The fitters job is to sell
I don't want to blame all bra fitters, I know that there are many excellent ones out there! But the fact is that most companies want to sell more than they want to sell well fitted bras. This is something you should be aware of.

Edit: I want to make clear that I do think that the combination of a knowledgeable customer and a great fitter is ideal. However, I would never suggest a woman to NOT study bras and only trust the fitter because of the reasons I wrote above.
